A very beautiful and poignant image....lovely work. Like and Favourite and congratulations on your feature in Positive Energy. I was especially interested in this one as the title caught my eye. We used always to end our Girl Guide meetings with Taps....slightly different words but they did still begin, Day is done, Gone the sun and include All is well, Safely rest. I can't remember it all now....too long ago but it stirred a distant and happy memory in me. Thank you.

Artist's Description

This haunting and eloquent melody played at military funerals originated during the Civil War. The original bugle call for "Lights Out" was known as the "Tatoo." General Daniel Butterfield of the Union Army lengthened some notes and shortened others, thus creating the 24 notes of "Taps" we know today. It was first formally played in 1862, according to regulation. There are various romantic stories about its origin, but these stories have no basis in fact. No one knows who the author is.

I have lettered this beautiful print in a soft Roman style, with a photo of our flag in front of the house, flown over my brother's grave in Arlington.

About Jacqueline Shuler

Jacqueline Shuler

Since opening Jacqueline Originals in 1971, I have spent most every day in creative activities. I love to draw, paint, do calligraphy and any combination of these skills! I own a Microsoft Surface Studio tablet which allows me to draw/paint directly on the surface and see the results immediately. I can also use these images as underpaintings for my acrylic creativity. I had a fifty-year retrospective exhibit in 2018 to celebrate my 80th birthday. My day starts with quiet time in meditation; I find that my mind is inundated with creative thoughts and ideas, so I need some time to get centered. I have...
